The Experimental Irritation Study following the Instillation of Backeriokiller Disinfectant on the Rabbit Eyes

Abstract
To determine the effects of backeriokiller(BK) disinfectant, a new hand wash product, on the ocular tissue, the experimental irritation study was conducted on the rabbit eyes.
Eighteen rabbits(36 eyes) were used and 0.1 ml solution was instilled into the eye and closed the eye for second. Ocular reactions including conjunctival injection, chemosis, sodium fluorescein stain of the cornea, and erosion were observed at 1, 10, 60, 180 minutes and 24, 48 hours following installation.
The reactions were noted using as a guide scale for scoring from grade I to grade IV according to the severity with the slit lamp examination and also measured the corneal thickness using the ultrasonic pachometer and electronic microscopy was taken.
The results were as follows ;
l. No ocular abnormalities were observed during the slit lamp examination through the periods except there were few grade 1 evidences of hyperemic eye at 1 hour, 3 hour, 24 hour and 48 hour.
2. The changes of the corneal thickness were not significant between pre and pos-tinstillation statistically(p>0.1).
3. Transmission electronic microscopy showed that outmost epithelial cells have intact cell membrane and numerous microvilli were well preserved in the surface of the epithelial cells.
